How did you hear about Volunteer Odyssey?

I learned of Volunteer Odyssey through outreach via City of Memphis Government (Mentoring Program).

Can you tell us about a meaningful volunteer experience that you found through VolunteerCompass?

During a very difficult time for me while mentoring, my grandmother passed.  I did not want to miss the scholars that week and felt the need to be around them.  Entering the room, it was almost as if they knew something was wrong. They all embraced me and spoke words of encouragement along with my co-mentors.  They gave me the things we were instilling in them. I realized then that I needed them just as much as they needed me. I will never forget that moment. 

What are some lessons that you’ve learned from volunteering in Memphis?

I have learned that being in the lives of these young people I am playing a vital role in their growth. 

What would you say to someone who is thinking of signing up to volunteer through Volunteer Odyssey?

I would say GO FOR IT!!!! I encourage anyone because signing up to volunteer would be one of the most rewarding experiences you could find.  It has filled my heart with so much my joy.
