Here is a list of local volunteer projects happening on MLK Day of Service:

Memphis Rox: Soulsville Neighborhood Cleanup: 8:30am-11:00am:

We are excited to partner with Memphis City Beautiful to host a Soulsville Neighborhood Cleanup for the MLK Day of Service! Volunteers may start arriving at 8:30am, and the cleanup will begin at 9am. Please wear closed-toed shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. We will provide all necessary materials, including trash bags, gloves, water, and high-visibility vests. Withers Collection Museum & Gallery: Museum Greeter: 10:00am-4:00pm (multiple shifts available):

Join us as a special events Museum Greeter on King Days. The Withers Collection will be commemorating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr! Guest can schedule docent-led tours of the Withers Collection’s permanent exhibition Let Us March On and our new exhibition His Dream Lives On.

Uptown Community Garden: MLK Day of Service: 9:00am-2:00pm (multiple shifts available)

The Uptown Community Garden will be collaborating with St. Jude’s ALSAC, Memphis City Beautiful, and Volunteers from around the city of Memphis for a MLK Day of Service. We will use this day to further the revitalization of the Uptown Community Garden.

Clean Memphis: we’re hosting several MLK Day of Service garden beautification projects throughout the city. Use the list below to find the project that works best for you! Please dress warm, wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to walk for any of these events.  All events are family friendly.

  • Orange Mound Beautification Project: 11:00am-1:00pm: This project consists of assisting with the transformation of a vacant lot. There will be debris pickup and removal along with spreading mulch. Sign up here!
  • Beltline neighborhood Improvement Project: 11:00am-3:30pm: Please join Jacob’s Ladder for a neighborhood improvement project. There are a couple of vacant houses that will be cleaned out and preserved so they can be rebuilt. There is a vacant lot that requires cleaning and clearing of debris and litter. Sign up here!
  • Klondike Smokey City Cleanup and Beautification: 11:00am to 1:00pm: Please join the Klondike Smokey City residents and Gardens Art Life for a neighborhood cleanup and garden spruce up. This project consists of litter abatement and storm drain cleaning. There will also be garden maintenance as well. Sign up here!

Big Green Memphis: School Garden Beautifications: 12:00pm-2:00pm: Spring is just around the corner! At this event you will be volunteering with Big Green Memphis staff as we prepare the school garden for the spring planting season.Please dress appropriately for the weather, wear closed-toe shoes, and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.

For MLK Day of service we’re hosting two different school garden beautifications in which Volunteer tasks will include: adding new soil to garden beds, garden irrigation repair, planting cover crops, and cleaning up.
