Memphis Volunteer Week #ShareYourService: Alexis Monais Myers

Volunteer Odyssey is grateful for all the amazing people giving back to the Memphis community. This week is Memphis Volunteer Week and we want to highlight some of our amazing volunteers and their stories.

Alexis Wonais Myers, originally from Chicago, currently works as an Account Director at Oden Marketing, but makes time to give back to the Memphis community through Volunteer Odyssey.

With a goal of helping others just as she has been helped throughout her life, Alexis continuously follows the concept of “paying it forward.” She volunteers to benefit the women and children of the Dorothy Day House. While working at the Dorothy Day House, Alexis has begun hosting a weekly baking class dedicated to inspiring the children of the sanctuary through culinary creativity. Through her efforts, she has established friendships and the opportunity to connect with cultures and traditions different than her own, showing her the true nature of the Memphis community.

“I’ve been very lucky to be engaged with Volunteer Odyssey and the various volunteer programs. It has helped me become ingrained into my community and I am able to see the heartbeat of this city through my work.”

Something that Alexis has found while working with the Dorothy Day House and Volunteer Odyssey is that volunteering in Memphis is unique. She pointed out that the volunteer programs here in Memphis are extremely focused on positively impacting not only our world but also our own city and its many neighborhoods. This aspect of the city has allowed Alexis to personally witness positive changes in the city over time. Because Memphis always has public service on the forefronts of its mind, Alexis believes that the community is inherently bringing its soul to combine passion with volunteer work.
