This week’s Featured Volunteer is Mark Schielke. Check out our Q&A with Mark.

How did you hear about Volunteer Odyssey and how have we helped with your volunteer journey?

I found Volunteer Odyssey by googling volunteer options in Memphis. Through the platform, I found several things such as the food bank, places to donate blood, etc.

What motivated you to volunteer for Catholic Charities of West TN?

I decided that instead of giving up something for Lent, I would spend my time volunteering so I spent my time at Catholic Charities when it was still a walk-in pantry. I have always been in the food service industry but due to COVID-19, I was laid off. I am passionate about food services so volunteering for Catholic Charities’ Food Bank especially spoke to me. Currently, I volunteer there every Monday through Thursday.

Can you tell us about your time at Catholic Charities recently?

I run general traffic control at Catholic Charities, as people pull in or walk up, I am the person who helps them get to where they need to be and give them instructions.

How has volunteering changed your life?

I am a member of Germantown United Methodist Church and have always had a passion for service. Especially during this time, it gives me something to do, and it’s the right thing to do. Jesus told us to feed the hungry and love our neighbors. There is an opportunity to make a difference in one person’s life through service. At the end of the day, volunteering makes me feel good, we should all think of that.
