This week’s Throwback Volunteer Spotlight is Kimberly Bowie.
This interview took place before the COVID-19 pandemic.
What motivates you to volunteer in Memphis?
I enjoy volunteering and want to make a difference in the community I live, work, and worship in.
What causes are you passionate about and what are some of your favorite non-profits in Memphis?
Ronald McDonald House is one of my favorite non-profits in Memphis. I also like Wolf River Conservancy, because it’s so much fun to canoe on the Wolf River and they make experiences like that more accessible to the public.
Can you tell us about your best volunteer experience so far? What makes it memorable?
My best volunteer experience so far was the time I spent reading with first graders at one of our adopted schools, Kate Bond Elementary. The students absorbed the information well and thoroughly enjoyed our story time. It was memorable because the kids were so loving and welcoming; I felt so blessed being there. It was one of the experiences that taught me you don’t have to do much to make a difference; just showing up and being present with people makes an impact.
