This week’s Throwback Volunteer Spotlight is Kathy Talley.
This interview took place prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
What motivates you to volunteer in Memphis?
As a retired school teacher who continues to love working with kids, volunteering at MAM (Memphis Athletic Ministry) has been a great fit for me. I particularly feel called to minister to kids in our city. I know that there is a great need in Memphis to work with kids. Through my experiences at MAM I have had opportunities to use my gifts. I love teaching kids about Jesus so I lead Elementary Bible Study. I have a desire to help kids become better readers so I help with homework and work on academic skills. In the past I have also led music classes with the kids and helped with cooking classes.
How does volunteering impact your life?
I’m sure that my help is appreciated, but I have to be honest and tell you that I am the one who receives the most blessings from my experiences at MAM. There is no greater feeling than to walk in the gym at MAM and kids say, “Hey Mrs. Kathy”, and come up and hug me. I have loved getting to know the kids and having the opportunity to be a part of their lives. I’m 72, but if I continue to be healthy, I hope to continue volunteering at MAM.
