Can you tell us about a meaningful/memorable volunteer experience that you found through VolunteerCompass?
I began volunteering when I was in the 10th grade at Streets Ministries and Memphis Athletic Ministries. Volunteering gained me access to internships and jobs that fit what I loved and opened many doors for me to explore. While at Memphis Athletic Ministries, I earned a summer internship, summer job, and a job in one of their programs throughout the school year. I met hundreds of kids different in ethnicity and personality. I read with and to the kids, helped with their homework, assisted the teachers, etc. Many of children’s problems, are similar to the problems that we teenagers go through. Having kids come to me and talk to me about their problems always had a strong impact on me. At this organization, I found my passion and what I was great at. And that was working with kids. Along with me coaching and mentoring the kids, there were also coaches that coached and mentored me. They treated me as if I were a family member. They made sure I was doing great in school, prepared me for adult life, helped me with any personal issues, and always made sure to put a smile on my face. I am extremely grateful for the experience I was able to receive volunteering at MAM.
What are some lessons that you’ve learned from volunteering in Memphis?
Volunteering in Memphis has taught me that there are always ways you can help. Whether it’s picking up trash, cutting down trees, or serving in a building, there is always something you can do. People in Memphis are always looking for help. No matter how big or small the impact is, it always makes a difference.
