This week’s Featured Volunteer is Lynn Edwards. Check out our Q&A with Lynn.

What motivates you to volunteer in Memphis?

Growing up, I always wanted to be a philanthropist. I believe in bettering your community which is how I like to channel my energy. I feel more fulfilled knowing that I’m helping someone.

Can you tell us about your best volunteer experience so far? What makes it memorable?

The most memorable volunteer experience I’ve ever had was a ten-day mission trip to Jamaica in 2016. We went to a school for five days, taught lessons, and spent time at an infirmary where the staff members were doing their best to care for people who were injured or in need of medical help. I was so young and it was my first exposure to real world problems. It taught me a lot about empathy and humility. When I returned to the US, I learned to not take things for granted and the value of show more gratitude. I’m actually going back with the same group in 2020.

In Memphis, I had a pretty great volunteer experience at the Compost Factory. Volunteering there really challenges you to get out of your comfort zone and to engage in a lot of hands-on activities for a great cause. You’re able to see the impact that you’re making and you’re surrounded by positive groups of people.

What are some lessons that you’ve learned from volunteering in Memphis?

As a volunteer, I’ve learned a lot about Memphis itself. For example, as part of riding around downtown with UBFM, I’ve learned a lot about the history of Memphis, how things have changed overtime and I’ve been able to build unique memories. I remember I was there when they lit up the lights on the bridge for the first time. I’ve also learned about how diverse Memphis is—from my fellow volunteers to the people we’re serving. There are always a lot of stories and lessons to learn from them. Volunteering in Memphis pushes me to put everything into perspective and continues to expose me to different viewpoints. It’s hard to break out of your shell sometimes but through volunteering I am able to get out of my comfort zone and expand my network.
