This week’s Featured Volunteer is Alex Hopper. Check out our Q&A with Alex.
What motivates you to volunteer in Memphis?
I am motivated to volunteer in Memphis because I believe it is every person’s responsibility to take every opportunity they have to make the world a better place and help those who need it.
What causes are you passionate about and what are some of your favorite non-profits in Memphis?
I am passionate about suicide prevention, feeding the hungry, and general humanitarian efforts. My favorite non-profits in Memphis are all the different food banks, especially the Mid-South Food Bank. Hunger is a horrible thing to be raised in or live in.
Can you tell us about your best volunteer experience so far? What makes it memorable?
My best volunteer experience so far has been the Out of the Darkness Walks that the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention conducts annually. They are a great opportunity to raise awareness and funds for those who need help. I enjoy being able to contribute my knowledge, physical strength, and leadership in the work I do at these walks. At the end of every one of them, I feel like I have used my time wisely and have made a difference. My volunteer shift is usually thirteen hours so it’s definitely a lot.
What are some lessons that you’ve learned from volunteering in Memphis?
A lesson that I’ve learned from volunteering in Memphis is that everywhere has the same problems, just in varying degrees. No matter where you go in this world, there will always be an organization that can use your skill sets to help others and make change for good in the community. You just have to seek them out and show you are wanting to help.
