Hello, my name is Nikole Agront Rodriguez and I am the newest team member at Volunteer Odyssey! I was born and raised on the beautiful island of Puerto Rico, but now Memphis is the city I call home. I came to the city a couple years ago to pursue a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Christian Brothers University. The Summer before my senior year at CBU I participated in the NICE (Non-Profit Internship Community Experience) Program, a donor funded program that connects students to internship opportunities at different non-profit organizations in the greater Memphis area. As fate would have it, for the NICE internship, I was placed at Volunteer Odyssey. It was a match-made in heaven from the start! I loved everything about this opportunity because I felt as if I was truly contributing to betterment of our city.

As an intern, Volunteer Odyssey gave me the liberty to develop a social media plan. This was definitively one of my favorite projects because I got to search for volunteering memes from time to time! However, my biggest take away from my internship with Volunteer Odyssey was that team work does make the dream work. The team is constantly communicating about the different projects that are taking place and are always asking for input or help.  This level of communication and team efforts ensure the success in each project. As the days passed by, I kept thinking that I would not only want to work at a non-profit organization but also one with this amazing team dynamic. Like most things, my internship with Volunteer Odyssey ended in August; however, I kept in contact with Sarah and the rest of the team.

I kept thinking that working in an organization like this would be a dream job for me. In this case, I can say that dreams do come true! A year later from my internship, now being a college graduate, I rejoin the amazing Volunteer Odyssey team as full-time staff member. I will be taking on the role of Community Engagement Coordinator. I will mainly focus on fostering relationships with our non-profit partners and developing a social media strategy. I am extremely excited to take all of the knowledge from my internship experience and put it into action in my role. My hopes are that I can help Volunteer Odyssey grow and have volunteer opportunities in all of Shelby County. I also want to engage the younger volunteers and motivate them into being lifelong volunteers.

Volunteering played a big role in my life growing up; it helped shape who I am today. Volunteer work gave me different perspective on life. It helped me be more empathetic and caring towards strangers. I started doing volunteer work in high school and quickly realized that as a society we need to do more to create a positive impact in our community. If we each contribute an hour of our time, together we can transform our environment that enriches the lives of all of us. I am excited to be part of an organization that dedicates itself to the betterment of our communities.

Weed whacking alongside Memphis Tilth at the St. Jude Garden

Hola, me llamo Nikole Agront Rodriguez  y soy la nueva empleada  Volunteer Odyssey. Nací en la hermosa isla de Puerto Rico, sin embargo, Memphis es mi hogar. Me mude a Memphis hace un par de años para obtener un bachillerato en psicología de la Universidad Christian Brothers. El verano antes de mi año senior en CBU participé en el programa NICE (Non-Profit Internship Community Experience), un programa financiado por donantes, que conecta a los estudiantes con oportunidades de internado en diferentes organizaciones sin fines de lucro en el área de Memphis. Como el destino lo tendría, para el internado de NICE, me asignaron a Volunteer Odyssey. ¡Fue amor a primera vista! Me encantó todo de esta oportunidad porque sentí que realmente estaba aportando al mejoramiento de nuestra ciudad.

Volunteer Odyssey me dio la libertad de desarrollar un plan de estrategia para las redes sociales. ¡Definitivamente este fue uno de mis proyectos favoritos ya que me pasaba buscando memes de servicio comunitario! Sin embargo, mi enseñanza favorita que aprendí en Volunteer Odyssey fue que el trabajo en equipo contribuye grandemente al logro de nuestras metas. El equipo se comunicaba constantemente sobre los diferentes proyectos que se estaban llevando a cabo y se pedían ayuda entre ellos. Este nivel de comunicación y esfuerzos de equipo aseguraban el éxito en cada proyecto. A medida que pasaban los días, seguía pensando en que no solo me gustaría trabajar en una organización sin fines de lucro, sino que también trabajaría en un equipo con este tipo de dinámica de grupo. Como la mayoría de las cosas, mi internado con Volunteer Odyssey terminó en agosto; sin embargo, me mantuve en contacto con Sarah y el resto del equipo.

Seguí pensando que trabajar en una organización como esta sería el trabajo de mis sueños. ¡En este caso, puedo decir que los sueños se hacen realidad! Un año después de mi internado, ya graduada de la universidad, me reincorporé al increíble equipo Volunteer Odyssey como miembro del personal a tiempo completo. Asumiré el rol de Coordinadora de Participación Comunitaria. Me centraré principalmente en desarrollar una estrategia para redes sociales y en fomentar las relaciones con nuestros socios sin fines de lucro. Estoy extremadamente emocionada de tomar el conocimiento que adquirí durante mi internado y ponerlo en acción en mi nuevo empleo. Espero poder ayudar a Volunteer Odyssey a crecer y tener oportunidades de voluntariado en todo Shelby County. También quiero reclutar a voluntarios más jóvenes y motivarlos a ser voluntarios de por vida.

El servicio comunitario tuvo un rol muy importante en mi vida desde temprana edad.  Comencé a hacer trabajo voluntario en la escuela secundaria y rápidamente me di cuenta de que, como sociedad, debemos hacer más para ayudarnos mutuamente como comunidad. El servir a otros me dio perspectiva hacia la vida. Si cada uno de nosotros contribuye con una hora de nuestro tiempo, juntos podemos transformar nuestro entorno para que enriquezca la vida de todos nosotros. Estoy emocionado de ser parte de una organización que se dedica al mejoramiento de nuestras comunidades.
