Memphis Volunteer Week #ShareYourService: Abby Huber
Volunteer Odyssey is grateful for all the amazing people giving back to the Memphis community. This week is Memphis Volunteer Week and we want to highlight some of our amazing volunteers and their stories.
Abby Huber is the Volunteer Coordinator at the Carpenter Art Garden. The Carpenter Art Garden’s mission is to work with the children of Binghampton to promote each child’s creative potential and self-worth through exposure to artistic, educational, and vocational programs.
Abby encourages you to get involved with the Carpenter Art Garden by going to www.volunteercompass.com and signing up to volunteer, “Carpenter Art Garden is always looking for volunteers to help with our after school programming. These programs include our Tuesday Art Garden, bike rides on the Greenline, and homework help. If you enjoy working with youth and want to feel like you are making a direct and hands on difference in your city, Carpenter Art Garden is the place for you.”
When asked if she volunteers in her personal life, Abby says, “I love spot volunteering around the city whenever I get the chance. There are so many aspects of volunteering that I adore. First, it is great to be able to learn more about all of the extraordinary organizations and their missions in the city of Memphis; there are so many ways to help out and so much momentum, and volunteering is a great way to find out about it all. Secondly, I always meet really cool people when I am serving, people from all over who are taking time out of their everyday lives to do something for the greater good of Memphis. Lastly, as someone who works with volunteers as part of my job, serving as a volunteer gives me unique insight into what it’s like being a volunteer and how CAG can improve the ways in which we interact with our volunteers.”
The Carpenter Art Garden is one of Volunteer Odyssey’s nonprofit partners. Abby described for us what this partnership has meant to the Garden, “Volunteer Odyssey has been an immense help to Carpenter Art Garden. First and foremost, the majority of the new volunteers that we see find out about CAG from the Volunteer Odyssey platform…We would have a harder time recruiting new and existing volunteers without Volunteer Odyssey…For the city of Memphis, as a whole, Volunteer Odyssey has been a huge asset. This city is full of soulful and giving people who want to make a difference, and Volunteer Odyssey is making the connections between these people and the organizations that need them easier than ever.”
