Hello! My name is Alyssa Stephens, and I recently joined the Volunteer Odyssey team as the summer Volunteer Experiences Intern. I am very excited for the opportunity to peer inside the world of non-profit organizations and to gain valuable experience during my journey.

Born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, I am very enthusiastic about all things 901-related. Whether it be going to Shelby Farms, coffee shops in Midtown, or the FedEX Forum for an event, Memphis holds a special place in my heart. In the fall of 2018, I made the move to Nashville to study Neuroscience and Religious Studies at Belmont University. I now spend my time between the two cities, enjoying all that both have to offer.

In middle school, what started as an agreement to serve twice a month in my church’s Children’s Ministry expanded into the discovery of my zeal for volunteer work. Realizing that I especially enjoy working with marginalized groups and children, I began serving through Special Olympics, Room in the Inn, and Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. Working with these organizations has led to some of my fondest memories and deepest friendships.

When reflecting on my volunteer experiences, I have found that threads of selflessness and non-judgement are large components of effective service. Seeing individuals from diverse walks of life banding together for a common, positive purpose at service events is powerful and has left a lasting impression on me. I believe that volunteering is important because it helps foster a spirit of gratitude, unity, and acceptance amongst all people, especially in a city as diverse as Memphis.

Earlier this year, I was introduced to Dr. Sarah Petschonek’s story and TEDx Talk. Hearing that she saw a need in the community and used her gifts and passions to meet it, forming Volunteer Odyssey in the process, I became excited to meet and learn from her. A few phone calls and emails later, here I am!

This summer, I hope to learn more about the behind-the-scenes mechanisms that go into running a multi-faceted organization such as Volunteer Odyssey. My hope is that by seeing aspects of non-profit work that are conventionally overlooked, I will gain a deeper appreciation for the individuals behind volunteer events and can begin to find my place within the nonprofit world. I cannot wait to explore the inner-workings of Volunteer Odyssey and serve alongside several of the organizations they partner with during my Summer Odyssey!
